There was this ridiculous thing called a 'ghetto latte' that people were talking about a while ago. It didn't even make sense to me, it was something about adding a bunch of cream or milk to your regular coffee, and voila, you've made a ghetto latte. Stupid, but it got a lot of press.
I just ordered a drink at Starbucks that made me think of that. A London Fog tea latte from Starbucks, if I'm not mistaken, is steamed milk, earl grey tea, and vanilla syrup. This drink was introduced recently there, although not a new invention. For a couple of years now, I've been ordering a vanilla soy earl grey misto, misto meaning they steep the tea in steamed milk. So what's the difference between these 2 drinks? About $2. A venti London Fog is $4.65 plus tax, and the venti vanilla soy earl grey misto I'm enjoying right now came to $2.78. (I paid with my Starbucks card, so the soy and syrup was free.) So am I ghetto, or just clever?

I have never ordered the latte, because I know better. It's not ghetto, it's old skool. I havetried to observe the process of them making the drinks and as far as I can tell, the only difference is that with a misto they also add a bit of hot water. So I guess the latte has more milk. But not $2 worth!
Clever.
I remember when I first heard of London Fogs (early grey tea misto with vanilla shot), I tried to order on at Starbucks and they would redefine it to me: I would say "London Fog" please and they would say "earl grey tea misto...." because I read somewhere they weren't allowed to call it a London Fog. And now London Fog appears on their menu but slightly retooled...?
Me, I avoid the chai latte and get something that's been dubbed "ghetto" chai that is chai tea misto. I get a vanilla shot, too, and can taste it is less creamy but it's cheaper and, really, just as good.
Chai tea misto? That never occurred to me! Such a good idea! I am so getting that tomorrow.
Chai tea mistos are the way to go. So much spicier than a Chai latte and you can add just the right amount of honey as opposed to the overly sweet pre-mixed Chai stuff they use. Viva la misto!
Also, I'm glad to hear they're still doing mistos. I was worried they would eliminate that option with the introduction of the tea lattes---I think the only real difference with those is that they use a bag with loose-leaf tea in it.
